a child's drawing of me as line-art. i have a boring man head and stubble, with assymetrical features, and am wearing a ghostbusters t-shirt.

Perigean Spring Tides, November 2024

After rollerskating, my family wanted to visit the tidepools at the lowest tide during the perigean spring tide. It's a very cool thing to see. I fueled my tired, rollerskate-battered body with a few carrots, a stolen cupcake, and willpower, and off we went!

We ended up finding street parking in Pleasure Point near Point Market and taking the surfer stairs down, where we found several hundred fellow explorers enjoying the novelty of wandering about in the sea's domain.

from the top down, the sky is a slightly purple grey and flat, overcast, until brightened by the last bit of sunset into some pink-orange with a littl ebit of definition in the clouds. the concrete reinforced layers of pleasure point are to the right, with the visible part of a house perched on top. the point overlooks the tidepools, which appear fairly flat since this section is well covered with thick green sea grass. some pools of water are present, and many indistinct people are enjoying the access to the pools, which are usually under a foot or so of ocean.

dozens of people mill about on the wide open tidepools, exposed by the extreme low tide, while the sun sets in the background

a close up shot of a big clump of Giant Kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera), with many of the stems, bladders, and leaves lying wet and flat. the stems are like long, brown cords, and the bladders are lighter brown and skinny like chili peppers. the leaves are long and smooth like eucalyptus.

the kelp was everywhere along with dark green sea grass, but here the slick surface of the leaves reflected a slate grey sky with a mirror finish

from the top down, a much moodier gray and blue cloudy sky. the sun has set but still brightens the sky overlooking pleasure point. the layers of the point are visible, and so is the natural rock on the right side fo the photo. a few trees, including two palms, strike upward from along the road. below, the tidepools are wide open and mostly soft dark green sea grass. a large pool features prominently in the center of the shot, and the sky is perfectly reflected in it. in the distance tiny people are still exploring the tidepools.

as we were leaving, i stole this shot from far out on the tidepools. across the sea grass and water you can see pleasure point from a view only surfers usually get.

blue and purple sky above, much darker as night has fallen. the grass covered tidepools are patchy with pools of sea water. pinpoints of light from people's phones are speckled through the dim, streetlamp lit beach. surfers have clustered near the bottom of the steps to rinse off and chat.

back on the surfer stairs with the light fading, i took a long exposure shot of a group of surfers returning. the sky's blues and purples above and the streetlight on the rocks and sand below.
